ABOUT THE ALLOY OF LAW

Fresh from the success of The Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson, best known for completing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time®, takes a break to return to the world of the bestselling Mistborn series.

Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds.

Kelsier, Vin, Elend, Sazed, Spook, and the rest are now part of history—or religion. Yet even as science and technology are reaching new heights, the old magics of Allomancy and Feruchemy continue to play a role in this reborn world. Out in the frontier lands known as the Roughs, they are crucial tools for the brave men and women attempting to establish order and justice.

One such is Waxillium Ladrian, a rare Twinborn, who can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After twenty years in the Roughs, Wax has been forced by family tragedy to return to the metropolis of Elendel. Now he must reluctantly put away his guns and assume the duties and dignity incumbent upon the head of a noble house. Or so he thinks, until he learns the hard way that the mansions and elegant tree-lined streets of the city can be even more dangerous than the dusty plains of the Roughs.

I like to larp and when they created a steampunk larp and ran it in nola this year I just enjoyed every minute I played. The culture of old west meets technology is just amazing.

  2. Gary says:

What could possibly be better than Victorian style clothing meeting the technologies that should have been with a bad a** attitude?

  3. Caitrin says:

I have to say most of my interest in steampunk is due to the amazing cosplay that I’ve seen. It is truly beautiful. It’s also fun to imagine for a time that our world could have taken a different turn and that things could be aesthetically much more warm and interesting versus the clean lines and coldness of today’s modernity.

  4. Wesley says:

It’s all about the style, gears metal and fashion. Alloy of law preview chapters are amazing!

  5. Jeremy Ness says:

All I need to say is FIREFLY! Gatta love the steampunk!!

  6. Shawn Bremaud says:

Today’s technology, though amazing simply cannot evoke the same sense of wonder that one gets from steampunk. The sometimes ludicrous, but always outlandish tech is a credit to the minds who can imagine as they do!

  7. Galadriel Johnson says:

The richness of the clothing and style as well as the sheer ingenuity needed to come up with the amazing inventions using only rudimentary supplies. There is also a lovely gentility and self respect that is not found in todays society.

  8. kalagrace says:

I love the idea of a world where technology and magic collide. I’m so excited for this book! Thanks for the chance to win!

  9. Yuriy says:

I like steampunk, because I like Victorianism (Dickens being a favourite author for many years) and I love science fiction. Steampunk combines these two concepts into one fascinating and intriguing mix. Steam technology possesses some quirky aesthetic appeal and Victorian style, etiquette and culture in general have their own distinctive charm and provide with a variety of lifestyles, conflicts and social situations to explore.

  10. Jeff Whiting says:

I haven’t read a steam punk book before but this book seems cool.

  11. James Weaver says:

I love the look and feel of Steampunk, elegance mixed with awesome. Amazing technology with an unmistakable style. And the cosplayers look amazing.

  12. Jon Hansen says:

I love steam punk because the steam part is when innovation is exciting and brand new to everybody. Then add in scifi and get this mixture of exciting innovation and scifi.

  13. Tom P says:

I love steampunk because it is awesome.

  14. Carrie O says:

People would be seething with jealousy when I play Alloy of Law on my custom steam-run cd player..ha-ha! I just love the fusion of science, modernity and innovation and the clothes of course. Thanks for the contest.

  15. TheEmptyLord says:

Steampunk novels have always held a certain charm for me because they integrate a more complex and familiar world into magic and the freedom of Fantasy. I’m using the term steampunk rather loosely to mean books that use inventions which bring them closer to our level of civilization, especially when the society as a whole relies on these inventions more commonly than magic. An auther that deals with steampunk commonly in his fantasy stories is L.E. Modesitt Jr, an excellent author, if somewhat underknown. I am eager to see Sanderson’s take on a Steampunk era, especially one with the magic system he developed in the Mistborn trilogy.

  17. Austin Morgan says:

Because I wasn’t born in 1909 when all the cool inventions were thought up.

  18. SMD says:

I have reservations about Steampunk, but I do find the fact that much of the genre goes to great lengths to reach for the adventuresome aspects of the Jules Verne’s romantic narratives. There’s nothing like a good adventure story!

  19. Andrew Richards says:

My experience with steam punk is minimal, but a couple of years ago I started following Girl Genius web comic. I love it. I also love Brandon Sandersons other works, so I’m really looking forward to reading (or listening to) my first steampunk book.

  20. Tyler says:

I like steam punk because I love technology and engineering. So when I get to see the different ways that people have thought up for a world’s technology to work I find it astounding and quite enjoyable.

  21. Joe57 says:

It is hard to define why I like steampunk, it’s a combination of the coolest parts of techonology and science and fantasy. Plus goggles and clockwork machinery are awesome.

  22. The Steampunk setting is unique and engaging, a blend of old and new with a focus on craftsmanship. There’s no cheap plastic knock-offs in the Steampunk world. Items are created by hand, by scientists or craftsmen, and for aesthetic pleasure as well as function. The blend of fantasy and science is also engaging.
